Heartbeat Music

Shovels & Rope

The first time I heard this husband and wife duo I was sold. Michael Trent and Carry Ann Hearst, otherwise known as Shovels and Rope have this postmodern yet traditional feel to their music. The name Shovels & Rope coming from the way old guitars go together “like a shovel and a rope”. This duo has been touring around, making a name for themselves for the past few years now. And with good reason, these two are inevitably comparable to the talented Civil Wars, but there is something special about these two that I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe it is Carry Ann Hearst’s voice that has so much soul and passion behind it that it locks you in right off the bat. Or maybe it is Michael Trent’s apparent ability to do everything from percussion, guitar, harmonica, to vocals. Either way, together these two make one hell of a team and they deserve all the heartbeats that they can get.

Their most recent release O’ Be Joyful is definitely one to mark down in the books. This duo has a umbelieveable ability to weave in and out of pitch perfect harmonies and I believe this record highlights their ability in every single way. I simply cannot get enough of the old school country-rock ‘n’ roll, foot pounding, hand clapping, make you go hoarse while singing along type of music that they continue to produce. I hope you enjoy their music as much as I do!
